How it works

The engine. Encryption is done by qpdf, a well-known open-source PDF library, compiled to WebAssembly and running inside this tab. Your password and your file never leave the browser.

Two passwords. The open password is required. The owner password, which lifts the permission restrictions, defaults to the same value if you leave it blank.

Permissions are a request. Only the password is enforced by the mathematics. A PDF reader chooses whether to honour "no printing" or "no copying".
